Projects

Smallholder Farmers Engagement at Cato Foods

At Cato Foods, our deep connection with the communities we serve has been a cornerstone of our growth and impact. Over the years, we’ve designed and implemented innovative, climate-smart solutions that directly support smallholder farmers within our farm clusters empowering them to grow, thrive, and lead sustainable livelihoods. Through our impact-driven approach, we’ve grown our farmer network from just 50 smallholder farmers cultivating 50 acres to over 2,000 farmers cultivating more than 800 hectares in just 10 years. Our capacity-building programs focus intentionally on people at the base of the pyramid, including women and youth. So far, we have trained and empowered over 15,000 smallholder farmers, especially in the value chains of biofortified crops, with an emphasis on cassava. These efforts have not only enhanced productivity but also promoted the consumption and utilization of nutritious crops supporting better health and incomes in rural communities.

We’re proud that our smallholder support model has become Nigeria’s leading biofortified farmer program, reaching over 100 rural communities in Osun State. In 2023, we secured a public-private partnership valued at $700,000 with IFDC through the 2SCALE program, directly impacting more than 3,000 farmers. 2025, our commitment has deepened with new partnerships:

BATNF (British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation) is supporting 100 smallholder farmers to cultivate climate resilient improved varieties of cassava. And IDH is supporting 1,000 young women smallholder farmers under the program called Women in sourcing enterprise across our different clusters to also cultivate improved varieties of cassava. With our continued technical interventions and agronomic support, farmers’ average productivity is projected to increase from 8 tons per hectare to 22 tons per hectare a transformative leap in output and livelihood.

Empowerment

Empowering Women and Youth (Through Inclusive Staffing and Nutrition Initiatives)

At Cato Foods, our staffing policy is intentionally designed to tackle the pressing issues of youth and women unemployment. Across our operations, we proudly engage 65% women and 80% youth, creating meaningful opportunities that empower and uplift individuals and communities.

We believe deeply in the principles of gender equality and youth inclusion, not just as ideals, but as drivers of real impact. Today, our efforts have led to the creation of over 150 direct and indirect jobs for women and young people across our agricultural and food value chains.

Our commitment to women goes beyond employment we also recognize that women’s nutrition is foundational to household food and nutrition security. That’s why we partner with primary healthcare centres to train women on how to prepare nutritious meals using biofortified crops such as cassava and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes.

To strengthen knowledge-sharing at the grassroots level, we’ve trained over 200 women extension officers on biofortified crops and nutrition. These women serve as community ambassadors disseminating vital information, promoting healthy feeding practices, and helping households make better food choices.

At Cato Foods, we’re not just building a business we’re building a movement for inclusive growth and better nutrition, powered by women and youth.

NOURISHKIDS is our commitment to reaching the most vulnerable especially out-of-school children with safe, nourishing, and affordable staple foods. We believe no child should be denied proper nutrition because of circumstance. Through targeted food support and community partnerships, we work to fight hunger, close the micronutrient gap, and give every child a healthier start in life.

NOURISHMOMS is dedicated to nourishing pregnant women, nursing mothers, and rural women in their most productive years. We provide access to safe, nutritious staple foods that support maternal health, healthy pregnancies, and stronger families. Because when women are well-nourished, communities thrive and the next generation gets a stronger start.

This a project is proposed to empower 3000 rural women and youths in the cause of 5 years on 2000 hectares of land to improve their livelihood bring them into the supply chain and creating access to market. It is going to be a Work, Learn and Earn project.
